When some great sorrow , like a mighty river,
Flows through your life with peace-destroying power,
And dearest things are swept from sight forever,
Say to your heart each trying hour :
"This too shall pass away."
When ceaseless toil has hushed your songs of gladness,
And you have grown almost too tired to pray,
Let this truth banish from your heart its sadness,
And ease the burdens of each trying days,
"This too shall pass away."
When fortune smiles and full of mirth and pleasure,
The days are flitting by without a care,
Lest you should rest with only earthly treasure,
Let these few words their fullest import bear:
"This too shall pass away."
When earnest labor brings you fame and glory,
And all earth`s noblest ones upon you smile,
Remember that life`s longest, grandest story,
Fills but a moment in earth`s litttle while:
"This too shall pass away."

"This too shall pass away"문구는 성경의 말씀이 아니라, 이스라엘 민족에게 전래되는 설화(fable)-Midrash 속의 문구라고 한다.

When seventeen she attended Bucksport Seminary, Maine, where she received some instruction in music, and where she

began to write hymns, some of which were used by him.
In 1880 Miss Wilson married Rev. C. Hartley Smith, and for twelve years they preached and ministered in Dakota. Both were musicians, and wherever they made calls, they were ask to sing some of the beloved hymns of the church. on returning east Mr. Smith joined the New England Southern Conference, and completed thirty-seven years of preaching. Mrs. Smith wrote more than five hundred poems, articles and hymns, the greater part of this number being hymns.
Origin of the fable <Wikipedia>
The fable retold by Fitzgerald can be traced to the first half of the 19th century, appearing in American papers by at least as early as 1839.[3] It usually involved a nameless "Eastern monarch". Its origin has been traced to the works of Persian Sufi poets, such as Sanai and Attar of Nishapur.[3] Attar records the fable of a powerful king who asks assembled wise men to create a ring that will make him happy when he is sad. After deliberation the sages hand him a simple ring with the words "This too will pass" etched on it, which has the desired effect to make him happy when he is sad. It also, however, became a curse for whenever he is happy.[3]
Many versions of comparable stories have been recorded by the Israel Folklore Archive at the University of Haifa.[6] Jewish folklore often casts Solomon as either the king humbled by the adage, or as the one who delivers it to another. In some versions the phrase is simplified even further, appearing as only the Hebrew letters gimel, zayin, and yodh, which begin the words "Gam zeh ya'avor" (Hebrew: גם זה יעבור, gam zeh yaavor), "this too shall pass."
