미국 California에서 자라는 Redwood는 다른 나무들과 달리 사진에서 보이는 나무 몸통(trunk)에 달려있는 Redwood Burls(씨앗 옹이)에서 씨앗을 생성하고 땅에 떠러져 발아하여 번식을 한다고 합니다.

나도 Muir Woods National Monument 를 방문하였을 때 안내판 글을 읽고 알았습니다.

Redwood는 3종류로 분류하는데, 미국 캘리포니아주 해안에서 자라는 Coast Redwood 와 씨에라(Sierra)산맥에서 키가 120m 까지 자라며 수령 3.000년이 되는 Giant Sequoia 두종류이며 // 중국에 키가 40-50 m의 작은 Redwood 가 있다고 함.

Redwood가 장수할 수 있는 것은 나무 표피가 두꺼워 화재가 발생하여도 견딜 수 있으며, 나무 뿌리가 서로 얽혀서 태풍이 불어도 나무가 쓰러지지 않기 때문이라고 합니다.

While on a trail in Muir Woods National Monument, I happened to notice something sticking out of the trunk of a Redwood. In the distance, I thought it was a huge nest. Along the way, I happened to meet one of the park rangers and asked him about what I saw. He told me what it is called (Redwood Burls) and how they were formed. Then, he told me that there is even a bigger burl and that one is along the trail.

I copied the following from the information board:

Large burls have formed on the trunks, of the trees before you, and fresh green sprouts are growing up from burls on the trees' massive root systems. These features reflect the ability of redwoods, unlike most other trees, to reproduce not only from seed but also directly from their own burl growth. Even redwood logs lying on the forest floor are apt to sprout long after the parent tree has fallen.
