이것 또한 지나가리라.

When some great sorrow , like a mighty river, 슬픔이 강물처럼 밀려 올 때

Flows through your life with peace-destroying power, 그대의 생애에 평화가 깨어질 때

And dearest things are swept from sight forever, 가장 소중한 것들이 영원히 사라졌을 때

Say to your heart each trying hour : 매번 그대의 가슴에 말하라:

"This too shall pass away."  "이것 또한 지나가리라."

 

When ceaseless toil has hushed your songs of gladness, 끝 없이 힘든일이 밀려올 때

And you have grown almost too tired to pray,  그대의 기도가 지쳐갈 때

Let this truth banish from your heart its sadness, 그대의 마음에서 슬픔을 터러버리고

And ease the burdens of each trying days,  하루 하루 그대의 짐을 벗어버려라

"This too shall pass away."   "이것 또한 지나가리라."

 

When fortune smiles and full of mirth and pleasure, 행운이 그대에게 미소 짓고 환희와 기쁨이 가득 할 때

The days are flitting by without a care,  근심 없는 날들이 스쳐갈 때

Lest you should rest with only earthly treasure,  세상 것들에 안주하지 말며

Let these few words their fullest import bear:  진실된 이 몇마디 말을 마음에 새겨두라

"This too shall pass away."    "이것 또한 지나가리라."

 

When earnest labor brings you fame and glory,   그대의 진실된 노력이 명예와 영광을 가져올 때

And all earth`s noblest ones upon you smile,  세상의 가장 귀한 것들이 그대에게 미소지을 때

Remember that life`s longest,grandest story,   세상에서 가장 오래가고 위대한 것도

Fills but a moment in earth`s litttle while:   잠시 스쳐 지나가는 순간임을 기억하라

"This too shall pass away."  "이것 또한 지나가리라."

"This too shall pass away"문구는 성경의 말씀이 아니라, 이스라엘 민족에게 전래되는 설화(fable) -Midrash 속의 문구라고 한다. 우리의 삶 가운데 희노애락을 넘어서 교만한 마음, 시기와 미움의 마음,허무한 마음을 내려놓고, 사랑하는 마음, 겸손한 마음으로 천성을 향하는 기도가 필요함을 일깨우는 문구이다. 구약성경중 Solomon왕에 의하여 쓰여진 전도서 각장의 내용이 이와 비슷한 맥락으로 쓰여져있다.

1856년 미국 메인주 출생으로 목사 사모가 되었으며, 교회지에 글과 500여편의 시를 남김.. Lanta Wilson Smith was born July 19, 1856 at Castine, Maine, and died October 19, 1939 at Taunton, Massachusetts.
