영국 출신 John Newton (1725~1807)은 노예선 선장으로 일을 하였으며, Africa에서 노예들을 싣고

미국으로 항해하던 중에 거센 풍랑으로 인하여 배가 침몰 위기에 몰리자, 하나님께 구원의 은총을 간절한

마음으로 간구하고 구사일생으로 살았다 합니다.

그 후로 노예상을 그만두고 노예제도를 반대하는 독실한 크리스찬의 삶을 살았으며, 후일에 목사가 되었다고 합니다.

1772년 하나님 구원의 은총에 감격하는 Amazing Grace 시(詩)를 쓰게되고 1779년에 첫번째 프린트가  나와서 세상에

알려졌으며, 지금의 곡이 붙쳐진 것은 1835년 이고,,

Amazing Grace 시(詩)의 바탕은 구약성경 역대(상) 17장 16~17절 이라고 합니다.  (찬송가 305장)

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound ,                           T`was grace that taught my heart to fear,

That saved a wretch like me .                                          And grace , my fears relieved .

I onece was lost but now I`m found ,                               How precious did that grace appear ,

Was blind , but now I see.                                               The hour I first believed .

 

Through many dangers toils and snares ,                       The Lord has promised good to me ,

I have already come .                                                      His word  my hope secures .

T`was grace has brought me safe thus far ,                    He will my shield and portion be .

And Grace will lead me home .                                        As long as life endures .

 

Yes ,when this flesh and heart shall fail ,                        The earth shall soon dissolve like snow ,

And mortal life shall cease ;                                            The sun forbear to shine ;

I shall possess within the veil ,                                        But  God ,who called me hear below ,

A life of joy and peace .                                                   Will be forever mine .
