In my dreams she still doth haunt me robed in garlands soaked in brine. / Though in life I used to hug her / Now she`s dead /I draw the line. 아직도 나의 꿈속에 물에 젖은 화환을 목에 두른 크레멘타인이 자주 나타나네. 살아있을 때 자주 안아주고 하였는데, 지금은 가고 없으니 이제 잊으려하네.

크레멘타인 노래의 배경

미국이 멕시코와의 전쟁(1846.4.~1848.2.)에서 승리하며, 스페인(멕시코)이 점령하였던 텍사스, 뉴멕시코,캐리포니아 등을

흡수하여 현재의 국경을 이루게 되었으며, 1848년 California의 Sacramento 인근에서 금이 처음으로 발견되었고, 일년 뒤인 1849년 부터 California Gold Rush 가 시작되었다. 

노래말에 나오는 forty- niner (49er)는 이 때에 금광을 찾아 나섯던 광부를 지칭하는 명사(nick name)가 되었다.

현재 캐리포니아 Sierra산맥에 위치하는 Yosemite공원  접근로  120번 도로와 140번 도로를 연결하는 도로 49번(49er)이

있으며 ,인근에 California State Mining & Minering Museum이 있다.

Forty-Niner(49er) 이름을 쓰는 곳이 San Francisco의 미식축구팀 과 경마팀 등이 있다. 

My Darling Clementine 노래의 배경이 광부들의 애환을 배경으로 쓰인 것이나, 우리가 번안곡으로 배운 것은 배경을 바닷가 어부로 바꾼 가사를 배웠다. 지금 생각하여도 잘 된 번역이라고 생각된다.

노랫말(음악)은 우리네 정서를 반영하는 것인데 ,서부개척의 시대적 배경을 경험하지 못한 우리에게는 바닷가 어부의 정서가 보다 더 친밀한 정서이기 때문이다. =Moon K. Lee=

"Oh My Darling, Clementine" is an American western folk ballad in trochaic meter usually credited to 

 Percy Montrose (1884), although it is sometimes credited to Barker Bradford.

The song is believed to have been based on another song called "Down by the River Liv'd a Maiden" by 

H. S. Thompson (1863). It is commonly performed in the key of F Major. Members of the Western Writers of America chose it as one of the Top 100 Western songs of all time.^[1]  [Wikipedia]
