큰바위 얼굴(The Great Stone Face) 이야기

"The Great Stone Face" is a short story published by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1850.

The story reappeared in a full-length book, The Snow-Image, and Other Twice-Told Tales,

published by Ticknor, Reed & Fields in 1852. It has since been republished and anthologized

many times.^[1]

Hawthorne sets the scene in a rural valley located in an unnamed U.S. state that resembles New Hampshire. A rock

formation in a nearby notch is imagined, by many locals and visitors, to resemble the shape and features of a human face:

The Great Stone Face, then, was a work of Nature in her mood of majestic playfulness, formed on the perpendicular side of a mountain by some immense rocks, which had been thrown together in such a position as, when viewed at a proper

distance, to precisely to resemble the features of the human countenance. It seemed as if an enormous giant, or a Titan,

had sculptured his own likeness on the precipice. There was the broad arch of the forehead, a hundred feet in height...^[1]

중학교 교과서에도 번역되어 소개된 Hawthorn의 단편소설 "큰바위 얼굴(The Great Stone Face)"을

포스팅하는 사유는 소설을 감상하고 평하는 것이 아니며, 소설속의 [큰바위 얼굴]  배경의 실재 여부를

말하고자 함이다.

소설의 속성이 fiction(가상)이기에 작가가 배경이 어디라고 이야기하지 않을 때는 작가가 살아온 주변이 배경이라 추정하는 것이 타당하리라 생각된다. 그러나 내년(2020년) 팔순기념으로 미국 대륙횡단 자동차여행을 구상하며 인터넷을 찾아 surfing을 하다보니, 어느 분이 생각 없이 올린 여행의 글에 오류를 발견하였기에 바르게 알려주고픈 마음에 이 글을 포스팅하게 된 것이다.

미국 South Dakoda주 Rushmore를 여행하신 분이 산에 거대하게 조각되어있는 4인의 미국 대통령

조각상을 보고 Hawthorn의 소설 큰바위 얼굴의 배경이 되었다고 잘못 소개한 것을 보았기 때문이다.

소설이 쓰여진 것은 1850년이며, Rushmore의 대통령상 조각은 1927년 착공하여 1941년에 완공된

것이다. 그러기에 만약 여행자가 여행기를 쓰며 Rushmore의 대통령상을 Hawthorn의 소설

[큰바위 얼굴]에서 착안하여 기획되었다고 말하면 틀리다고 단정적으로 말할 수는 없을 것이다.

참고로 대통령 조각상은 왼쪽 부터 워싱턴(Foundation), 제퍼슨(Growth) ,루즈벨트(Development),

링컨(Preservation) 이다.

Wikipedia사전에도 소설의 배경으로 지목되지 않은 저자가 살았던 New Hampshire의 계곡을

이야기하고 있으며,미국 사람들은 뉴햄프셔주 [The Oldman View]를 소설의 배경이라 생각하고

내가 여행할 당시(1984년)에  많은 관광객이 들려서 구경하였으며 우편옆서에도 소개되어 있었다.

[참고로 The Oldman View의 바위는 2003년 무너져내려 현재는 존재하지 않는다.]
