영국 출신 John Newton (1725~1807)은 노예선(奴隸船) 선장으로 일을 하였으며, Africa에서 노예들을 싣고 미국으로 항해하던 중에 거센 풍랑을 맞이하여 배가 침몰 위기에 몰리자, 하나님께 간절한 마음으로 구원의 은총을 간구하는 기도를 드리고 구사일생으로 살았다고 합니다. 그 이후로 노예상(奴隸商) 일을 그만두고 노예제도를 반대하는 독실한 크리스찬의 삶을 살았으며, 후일에 목사가 되었다고 합니다. 1772년 하나님 구원의 은총에 감격하는 Amazing Grace 시(詩)를 쓰게되고 1779년에 첫번째 프린트가  나와서 세상에 알려졌으며, 지금의 곡이 붙쳐진 것은 1835년 이고, Amazing Grace 시(詩)의 바탕은 구약성경 역대(상) 17장 16~17절 이라고 합니다.

 Cherokee Tribe (체로키족)은 미국 동남부 Appalachia산맥 Mt.Smoky인근에 살던 인디언으로, 19세기 중엽부터 Oklahoma주로 강제 이주시켜서 지금은 스모키산 Indian Reservation 지역에 소수가 살고 있음.
